Homemade skincare: Sour Cream and Blueberry Face Mask

I am a big fan of homemade face masks, they are inexpensive they really do work and you can usually find the ingredients in your kitchen....you can vary what you put in them to make different types of masks.  The biggest advantage of homemade facemasks is that everything you put in them is natural and chemical free.  This particular mask sounds simple but it’s really powerful and has all the key elements to make your skin look softer, fresher and glowing.

Why Sour Cream?

Well, the main reason is the Lactic Acid that it contains. A lot of skin care products today contain lactic acid because it has amazing moisturising properties and helps prevent premature ageing. It also acts as a mild exfoliator and an antibacterial treatment for skin types that are prone to acne and blemishes. Lactic Acid also promotes collagen production in your skin which gives it a youthful, plump look.

Feeling Blue?

I love blueberries! They are the POWER HOUSE of antioxidants. These are little soldiers that can stop the formation of wrinkles in their tracks! Several skin care products use blueberries as their anti-ageing ingredient in their anti-ageing creams. These little dark blue berries are bursting with vitamin C and E – which are essential to keep your skin looking young and fresh!

How to Make...

This recipe (makes one application for your face and neck)

You will need:

  • 1 heaped spoonful of sour cream
  • 10(ish) blueberries
  • 1 small plastic container, shallow cup or a small jar (I keep jars from salsa dips – these are great because they are wide and shallow).

Let’s do this:

Place all the ingredients in your container, mash them really well with a fork until the skin of the blueberries is more or less broken down and everything is integrated through. If the mixture is too runny place the jar in the fridge and let it sit for 5 minutes. Smooth the mixture onto your face and neck with your hands and if you are feeling extra adventurous, put a sheet of cling film over your face with holes made out for our eyes and nose (!) - this will give it extra absorption properties. Leave it on for 15-20 minutes then wash it off with luke warm water and follow this with an application of your favourite moisturiser or a couple of drops of facial oil like Rose Hip Oil or Bio Oil that I spoke about in an earlier post. It’s quick; it really does work and guess what...

...Your skin will thank you for it!
